Banksy Starts a Riot

The mild, mild west.
Life imitates art as the police in riot gear mirror the Banksy police riot piece up in the background.

Powerful photo that almost seems photoshopped, but it is a real life shot taken with police in full riot gear lining up in front of a Banksy piece picturing police in full riot gear.

Banksy's piece is entitled 'Mild, Mild, West' and it features police in full riot gear charging a cartoon animal holding a gas bomb.

The Guardian reports that the riots were caused by a heavy handed response by police to some vandalism directed towards an unwanted corporate chain store.

Oh Shit! Now You Fucked Up!!

There are some walls you just don't touch--and especially when the owner wants the art on the building. The buffman fucked up by taking down this particular piece on Fairfax that featured some of the top graffiti and street artists in the world, especially since they took the fence down and broke an entering to get in. Click the jump for more

We have covered this piece many, many times and mentioned how it is hands down our favorite wall ever.

And today, a private company named Graffiti Control Systems came to this wall on Fairfax and forced an entering by taking the fence off its hinges, and then starting to paint over over the wall. People noticed and called the police and the building owner, who came over and chased the workers off the wall. Unfortunately, most of the wall was ruined by that time.

The wall featured amazing work from Retna, Revok, Saber, Os Gemeos, Rime, and Norm.

We really hope that there is a severe smack down in this case. Graffiti and street art are really being embraced in a new way by society, and in this situation here, the real criminals are the buff men.

Top picture sent into us by Kevin, and the rest of the pictures were taken from LA TACO. To read a more thorough and comprehensive coverage that raises some really good points, make sure to check out the articles on LA TACO and Revok.

Busted!

Great shot of some action going on last night in the rain.

Cops lights going off next to pastes by Bankrupt Slut and Septerhed.

Don't know the full story here, but it looks interesting~

Thanks to G for sending in the photo (and check out more on his site).

Graffiti Writers Just Got More Fame - Thanks LAPD!

The LAPD plans to launch a graffiti database for Los Angeles. It will list all the hits by each writer, so that it will be easy to view and see who's really getting up! Click the jump for more

Cops don't get it.

Not only is pursuing graffiti an essentially purposeless task--you are never going to stop it. Even if you posted a cop on every street corner, kids would still be catching tags in the alley ways.

And the street truth has been around for a long time, ever since Wild Style, and that truth is when a writer gets busted by the cops it only gives them street fame.

So now that the cops are making this database, the members of society who don't like graffiti should question, "Why?" Is a graffiti database going to stop or prevent graffiti? No. Is it going to help get restitution from a 14 yr old kid when you have a list of all the tags he caught? No. Is it a big waste of taxpayer money? Yes.

And in the meantime, the graffiti writers say thanks for the data base and 'Thanks for the fame!'

***Thanks to Oz for the scoop and LAist for the info***

These Are The Guys Stealing the Banksy!

Thanks to the guys at The Comedy Store, we just got some exclusive action shots of Banksy's Charlie Brown being 'stolen' from the wall. Click the jump below for more

It sounds like another wild episode with a crowd of unhappy onlookers who even tried calling the cops.

Check out The Comedy Store's Tumblr for the full store about 'those creeps that stole the Banksy.'

Hooked Up - Atlas

We met up with graffiti heavyweight Atlas CBS at Starbucks last weekend.

This guy is a straight legend in the game. We have been enjoying his images for years in magazines and online. Few cats have developed their own recognizable style or 'font' and Atlas has a handful to his name that are instantly recognizable.

Atlas made the mainstream news in 2010 when he got busted for the beautiful cats that he put all over the city. He talked about how crazy it was when the police raided his house with full riot gear and a helicopter. But the good news is he says he's doing better than ever since getting busted. In our opinion, the major crime in this whole story is not seeing Atlas' art on the streets anymore.

It was really awesome meeting up with Atlas in person. Thanks for the stickers and sketch!

Stay up~

Jerry Brown Threatened in Orange County- Quit Giving Graffiti a Bad Name!

Some asshole with a spray can and a limited spelling vocabulary has written some threatening messages in Orange County towards California Governor Jerry Brown, and nearly every minority group one can think of.

We are just as pissed as anyone and hope this asshole gets caught-too often any thing sprayed gets classified as 'graffiti' and he's giving graffiti writers a bad name. Furthermore, this isn't even graffiti because the hack didn't sign a name . . .

The police are reportedly taking this threat against the Governor seriously-perhaps more than necessary, and have determined it a terrorist threat.

Interesting that even though the vandal-and this person is nothing but that- issued threats against Blacks, the Chinese, Catholics and more, it is only the threat against the Governor that is being treated most seriously. We highly doubt this person who can't spell could organize anything well enough to successfully harm the Governor, but the minority groups are much more real targets, even if the police don't treat it that way.

But most of all, it pains us whenever something like this gets a lot of publicity. Most people just clump anything with a spray can as graffiti-and think that all graffiti is gang related. Blogs like MELROSEandFAIRFAX are trying to push artistic mediums like graffiti and street art and enhance public perception, and we feel that fiascos like this give real graffiti a bad name.

Real graffiti has nothing to do with this hate speech or gangs. Real graffiti is about artistic expression and getting up. The biggest crime involved is the re-attribution of space, and unlike any other crime in the world, a graffiti artist will take nothing and leave their name at the scene of the crime.

This is not graffiti, but just some spray-can vandalism by a bigoted simpleton.

Quit giving graffiti a bad name!
