JR Comes to Melrose~ Action Shots!

JR came through our neck of the woods yesterday and put up a beautiful piece of street art, replacing the Obey/Saber mural at De La Barracuda.

It is a real honor having JR right in the hood. Love it~ Click the jump for more exclusive first jump action shots from MELROSEandFAIRFAX.

We snapped most of these shots ourselves (big thanks to John Wellington Ennis for the beautiful nighttime shot), but we couldn't have done such comprehensive coverage without the readers of the blog helping out in such a huge way.

So swing by Melrose to see this beautiful new piece from JR. Keep sending us those pics!

Banksy Billboard on Sunset Taken Down

No Longer Dreamin'.

Banksy's 'Livin' the Dream' Billboard Takeover on Sunset has been take down and is no longer running. Click the jump below for more

The billboard was reportedly taken down and rolled up, so keep your eyes peeled on Ebay to see when this surfaces.

This comes only a few hours after the Charlie Brown was boarded up and covered.

It is unfortunate that the Banksy pieces are disappearing so fast. Wonder if its by design, or just business oriented property owners?

So hurry and see remaining two Banksy pieces while you still can!

***Big thanks to John Wellington Ennis for providing these daytime shots of the billboard taken earlier today before it was buffed. You can see more of John's politically infused work at Pay2Play.tv***

This Is Sonya Judging You

"This is Sonya judging you because you still have a myspace account." from Insurgency Inc.

Up with art from Dog Byte, an ad from Publish Enemies, and an interesting stencil which seems to say 'watch out for filming'. - being filmed by John Wellington Ennis.

Old Folks Don't Understand . . . (Street Art is THE Major Art Movement of this Generation)

The old man looks like he wants to swat John with his cane!

Old people don't understand how big this is . . .

John Wellington Ennis was filming some footage of the street art on this corner when this old man crossed the street. When the old man was mid-way across the street, he noticed was John was doing and stopped for a full 10 second count. It was as though he was processing what was happening.

Once he got out of the street, he turned and stared some more. He couldn't comprehend the scene. It seemed that he wanted to say something, or maybe just whack John with his cane, but never did.

Yesterday, CurbedLA featured our post on the Epic Street Art taking place on the Old Spaghetti Factory building. We love the bump, but we were really surprised at the general tone of the comments. Most seem to view graffiti and street art as one and the same, and feel that corporal punishment should be reintroduced to punish the 'artists'.

Well, we feel that street art, just like all the major art movements, will be rejected by the general public. It is only after the fact that it will be given its full credit for shaping the world we live in.

And, as a friend pointed out the other day, street art is already as big, or bigger than any modern art movement, and by all indications, it will just keep getting bigger (and better!)~

We are proud to be on the front end of this, and look forward to seeing how it all plays out.

Who's Filming Who?

Taking a shot while being filmed . . .

We are snapping a pic of the stickers on this sign while John Wellington Ennis is filming us for his documentary.

Stickers from Irok, Rotting Fresh, Swoe, Exercise, Jaber.

John Wellington Ennis - One Dude's Quest to Save Democracy

The contributors to MELROSEandFAIRFAX stood on the opposite end of the camera today when we were interviewed by John Wellington Ennis.

John has long been interested in street art-especially stickers. He currently puts up the Obama/Adama stickers around town, and was also behind the famous 'Giuliani is a Jerk' stickers that even made it on the Beastie Boys' guitar during a performance on Saturday Night Live.

John interviewed us for his current project . . .

His current project dives into the rich history of the Monopoly board game, which is surprisingly full of intrigue and scandal.

John is a filmaker and Huffington Post contributor. But really, he is just one dude who is trying to save democracy by exposing the way that government, or persons in authority, abuse their power.

Because Alec Monopoly bridged John's interests between street art and Monopoly, John has interviewed Alec for his film, and produced 2 dope videos of Alec on the streets

It was really cool talking with John about street art and hegemony, and we also shot some unique 'action' footage featuring John documenting us while we do what we do to get footage for this blog. We will keep you updated and let you know when John's film comes out, but for now, you can find out more about John and his film at his websites

^John shooting footage of some illegal building advertisement, and what is possibly some street art underneath the Green Hornet advertisement. Unless Burger King is doing guerilla marketing, that is.

Hooked Up - Alec Monopoly

We got hooked up with some Alec Monopoly stickers.

The hook up was from Alec but through John Wellington Ennis, producer of a couple of videos on Alec Monopoly.

Thanks for the slaps!

An Alec Street Art Xmas

***NEW ALEC MONOPOLY STREET VIDEO***

MELROSEandFAIRFAX received the heads up on a fresh new street art video from Alec Monopoly.

Packed full of intense street action, this is an awesome video that shows how Alec is a full "street art addict".

And we love it all the more because it gives a couple dope shout outs to MELROSEandFAIRFAX. Be sure to check it out with the link below

***NEW ALEC MONOPOLY STREET VIDEO***

And enjoy the Alec Street Art adaption of A Night Before Christmas.

A Street Art Xmas
T’was the night before Christmas, when streets were at peace,
Not a driver was driving, not even police.
Banners were hung in storefronts with care,
In hopes that tourists soon would shop there.
Families were sleeping all snug in their beds,
With holiday jingles stuck in their heads.
My wife fast asleep while I clutched a pillow case,
The dog in our bed takes up most of the space.
When outside our flat there appeared such a gawker,
I thought it was an LAPD helicopter.
Outside the window I saw a moustache
And a winking man wearing a sash.
The moon was eclipsed, but in the streetlights’ glow,
I could make out his top hat and tuxedo.
When what to my near-sighted eyes should appear?
Some blurry shapes that weren’t quite clear.
Then, with my glasses, I could make out metallic –
I knew it must be that street artist Alec!
Like Mad Max with art supplies in his big black jeep
And with spray can in hand, he was off in a leap:
“Now, Jack! Now, Dylan! Now, Monopoly Man’s!
On traffic boxes, on chimneys, on garbage cans!
Painted on billboards, pasted on walls,
Now dash away, dash away, before somebody calls!”
A smile on his face and a tip of his head
Let me know I had nothing to dread.
He spoke not a word, save for his sprayer,
Stenciling my street like a city surveyor.
Then laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, away he drove.
But I saw what he tagged once he drove out of sight:
“Happy Holidays to all, and to all a good night!”
