JR Hits Hollywood
JR goes big in West Hollywood with a giant mural on 3rd street and La Cienega.
Since JR had a recent campaign entitled 'Wrinkles of the City', we thought it would be cool to show the wrinkles in a JR piece. The last photo is to try and capture the wrinkles in the paste.

New JR in Los Angeles
JR is back putting up art in Los Angeles.
A new JR mural popped up on this building in Echo Park, featuring the face of an older woman.
Awesome stuff, and great to have more JR art in LA.

Tweedle Guns
The last shot of the JR wall yesterday as it got buffed.
With a new paste saying Tweedle Guns from unknown artist going over Armo.
JR Gets Buffed On Melrose
JR's piece got buffed on Melrose, but this is not an illegitimate city buff like what happened with the graffiti mural on Fairfax this week.
We really loved this JR piece. It was beautiful and really brought a lot to the area.
New art is set to go up soon, and I asked the head guy if he knew what was coming next, and he said it might be a big wall from Slick and Dissizit.
Dis Is It?
A big LA hand from Dissizit went up on what was once the JR wall on Melrose. Love the piece, don't love the placement.
We know that Slick runs Dissizit, and we are assuming, he puts up the street stuff (along with his home boy Enik).
We know that Slick has been around for longer than most in the graffiti game, and has done some really impressive things. And on a personal note, we really dig Slick's aesthetic almost no matter what he does. The dude's got a great eye for what looks fresh, and even when his style changes, his shit always pops. Truly, Dissizit puts out some dope stuff, and it is one of the few street corporate campaigns that we enjoy seeing out there, and feel it really contributes to the scene and adds to the flavor of the streets.
We are a bit surprised that Slick would have clipped (or capped-can't really tell) a writer to put the piece up, and so many other artist's stickers and tags with monstrous stickers. After seeing this, and the recent Madonna/Dissizit art wall takeover downtown, it makes us wonder if this is contributing to the scene? or just straight advertising?
And we dig Slick's LA hands. It is an awesome fuckin image (and we even tried to score one of the 'Goldfinger' LA Hands vinyl toys but struck out!). It represents LA well, and we love seeing it, but we just don't think that the JR mural is the place for it.
Still, that said, since the JR mural seemed to get opened up anyway with the David Flores work and throwies at the bottom, maybe this is fair game. And it is cool to see the stamp of 'LA' on a JR (we love the photos!).
What do people think about this? Is it advertising? Does it add to the piece? Is the JR wall free game now?
JR Continues To Change The World
JR continues with his world wide art project as he brings 'Inside Out' to Tunisia.
He was shut down in the first two cities, but the cause pressed onward, and the art still went up, and made a bold political statement.
In Tunisia, JR was shut down in the first two spots he tried to put up art. But he kept on with the project, and ended up placing much of the art in key spots where the images of the people went up in the same location where huge murals of Tunisia's ruler used to be.
As always, JR's portraits feature the local residents, so this art was essentially claiming the area back for the people.
Very bold and powerful statement, and truly, JR's art continues to literally change the world. You can find more info HERE

JR Gets Faced
We have posted a few pics of this piece before, but we finally got a chance to go downtown and snap some shots of our own.
Awesome, huge, powerful piece.
And placed in a location where it (most likely) won't get tagged up.
JR Tagged Downtown
In addition to being hit up on Melrose, this JR mural also got tagged up downtown.
What happened on Melrose brought up a lot of discussion about the whether it was a good addition or pure vandalism. It seemed nearly everyone agrees that if you're going to hit something like this, it'd better be a fill in.
But what we haven't heard anyone say, is that these tags violate one of the biggest unwritten rules of graffiti, and that is, if you're going to go over something, you've got to do it bigger and better.
JR Gets Tagged

After being 'decorated' by David Flores last week, JR's mural gets tagged on Melrose.
The people who don't like graffiti will probably despise this, while supporters of graff might support this as the 'organic process of a piece on the streets'.
Our take on it is that it is a poor move and in bad taste. Mainly because there are plenty of blank walls in the city, and even right next to this one. But the writers chose to hit this wall for obvious reasons.
While we are never big fans of 'fame-jocking' (c'mon, at least in NY they do it with style and full color fill-ins!), the biggest issue to us is the violation of the idea of 'team'. We understand that not everyone sees it this way, but we feel that street art is a movement, and those who are getting up are part of the 'team'. Graffiti is at the root of this movement, and in our opinion a very big part of it. And just like animals don't shit where they eat, members of the movement shouldn't play against the team by defacing art like this.
Not everyone may agree, but we feel that this piece by JR was epic, and best in its natural state.
Fortunately, for the most part most artists get up respectfully, and LA doesn't carry a lot of beef that some city's seem to have (where the only hot spots are just folks capping over each other). Its cool how in LA, most pieces are treated with respect and get the time to shine. Maybe that's why LA is becoming the top spot for street art in the entire world.
JR Gets Painted
Defaced? or collab?
We aren't familiar with JR doing a collaboration before, so we are skeptical that is what happened.
This does look exactly like David Flores' signature style, and we do know that he has done previous pieces at De La Barracuda.
Not sure what exactly this is about, but it definitely changes the flavor of the piece. In our opinion, it was a much more powerful piece of art before the addition.
JR -"The World Is Fucked Up"

Earlier this week, TED released a video of JR giving a speech in which he reveals his wish to help change the world 'Inside Out'.
It is a fascinating video, as JR details how he got started in street art, and the incredible, powerful things that his art has accomplished. It has truly changed the world.
Even though it is a 25 minute video, it is well worth watching. JR is excited and animated through the whole speech, and his French accent is charming and engaging. But the story itself is absolutely fascinating. You will be glad you watched it, and hopefully be motivated to visit JR's website and help change the world by turning it 'Inside Out'
MELROSEandFAIRFAX Gets Inside Out
Here is our print from JR's 'Inside Out' exhibit in Long Beach. The owner of the Phantom Gallery liked Shasta so much that she wanted to take a picture of our picture. Click the jump to see more portraits from JR's 'Inside Out'
The better looking half of MELROSEandFAIRFAX had to work and couldn't make the show, so the other half of M&F, G, decided to Terry Richardson-up the photo shoot and take his shirt off for the pic.
The prints are amazing and HUUUGE! The print is approximately 5 feet by 3 feet and it says 'Inside Out' at the top and bottom of the pic. Very cool. Not sure where we will hang it yet.

The presentation of JR's work at his exhibit, Inside Out really shows how the work goes beyond art and really impacts and influences people's lives. Click the jump for more
There are parts of the world that don't have cell phones or cameras. There are places in the world where identity is a much different thing than it is in America. The pictures from the JR's show demonstrate how JR's work not only serves as decoration, or 'art', but it gives the people in these places a real identity, something much different, and much more empowered than before.
And, in some of these spots, the pieces were also functional. Many of the rooftop canvases are made out of plastic and they serve to protect the people living there from the elements.
JR's show was amazing on many levels, and it really shows how powerful art can be.
