JR Continues To Change The World

JR continues with his world wide art project as he brings 'Inside Out' to Tunisia.

He was shut down in the first two cities, but the cause pressed onward, and the art still went up, and made a bold political statement.

In Tunisia, JR was shut down in the first two spots he tried to put up art. But he kept on with the project, and ended up placing much of the art in key spots where the images of the people went up in the same location where huge murals of Tunisia's ruler used to be.

As always, JR's portraits feature the local residents, so this art was essentially claiming the area back for the people.

Very bold and powerful statement, and truly, JR's art continues to literally change the world. You can find more info HERE

JR -"The World Is Fucked Up"

Earlier this week, TED released a video of JR giving a speech in which he reveals his wish to help change the world 'Inside Out'.

It is a fascinating video, as JR details how he got started in street art, and the incredible, powerful things that his art has accomplished. It has truly changed the world.

Even though it is a 25 minute video, it is well worth watching. JR is excited and animated through the whole speech, and his French accent is charming and engaging. But the story itself is absolutely fascinating. You will be glad you watched it, and hopefully be motivated to visit JR's website and help change the world by turning it 'Inside Out'

MELROSEandFAIRFAX Gets Inside Out

The better looking half of MELROSEandFAIRFAX had to work and couldn't make the show, so the other half of M&F, G, decided to Terry Richardson-up the photo shoot and take his shirt off for the pic.

The prints are amazing and HUUUGE! The print is approximately 5 feet by 3 feet and it says 'Inside Out' at the top and bottom of the pic. Very cool. Not sure where we will hang it yet.

Pics From JR's Inside Out Exhibit (Pt. 3/3) - The Art

There are parts of the world that don't have cell phones or cameras. There are places in the world where identity is a much different thing than it is in America. The pictures from the JR's show demonstrate how JR's work not only serves as decoration, or 'art', but it gives the people in these places a real identity, something much different, and much more empowered than before.

And, in some of these spots, the pieces were also functional. Many of the rooftop canvases are made out of plastic and they serve to protect the people living there from the elements.

JR's show was amazing on many levels, and it really shows how powerful art can be.

Pics From JR's Inside Out Exhibit (Pt. 2/3) - The Prints

This is one of our favorite pictorial posts. Here are some great shots we snapped of people receiving their prints from JR's Inside Out.

This is a really cool project, and the crowd that showed up was very diverse. All different types of people showed up who were all different ages and from all different walks of life. Older folks, and children. Housewives and hipsters. It was a very eclectic group, and the only common theme was JR's wish to 'turn the world inside out'.

The crowd turn-out itself was much bigger than anticipated. When we arrived around lunchtime on Friday, there were 40-50 people in line for the photobooth, and the gallery told us that they were already running low on ink and paper and didn't know if they would have enough to finish the day. It just goes to show how powerful JR's message is, and that people are really responding to it.

And the prints were really spectacular. The photo booth was set up with JR's lenses and filters, and it was really cool to see the way it captured the pics of the people.

Cryptikally Inside Out

We have never met Cryptik, and we got really excited when we saw this car sitting out front JR's exhibit adorned with Crytik's stickers. Check out the reflection of JR's pieces in the window, and click the jump for more

Even though it was covered in Cryptik stickers (and one from 455er), it was not Cryptik's vehicle.

The nice lady who was driving it said that she had worked with the Phantom Gallery and Cryptik. She said Cryptik is a super cool guy who gave a lot of free stickers for the kids to enjoy.

We love these shots with JR's pieces reflecting back into the shot.

Pics From JR's Inside Out Exhibit (Pt. 1/3)

Just like the artwork, the experience was spectacular. Here are some pics from JR's participatory art exhibit 'Inside Out'.

When we found out that JR's 'Inside Out' was only a two-day event for the general public and ended yesterday, we cancelled all our plans, arranged a new ride for the better half of M&F to get to work, and hustled down to the Phantom Gallery in Long Beach to experience JR's show in person.

And the experience was truly spectacular. The artwork was amazing, the people we met were all cool art enthusiasts, and perhaps the best thing of all was getting the chance to participate in JR's artwork. Everyone who went to the show had the chance to contribute to the Inside Out project by having a photo taken in the special photo booth set up with JR's signature lighting and filters.

And everyone who got their picture taken received a massive 5 foot by 3 foot print of the photo, which JR hopes people will put out to hang in the community.

The show was huge, and the turnout was more than anticipated. When we left Friday mid-afternoon, the gallery told us they were running short on ink and paper. Hopefully, a good amount of LA-based art lovers were able to make it over and participate. But anyone in the world can participate in the Inside Out project online by visiting the website and submitting a pic online, and receive a poster to hang up. We are going to start our coverage from the outside in, and here are the pics of JR's artwork on the outside of the Phantom Gallery's building. As someone pointed out, the rips and tears in the pieces really show how the art is alive.

JR Goes 'Inside Out'

JR just launched his new global art project 'Inside Out'.

There is an amazing video on the site that really gives insight into JR and the development of his art with the faces.

And the coolest part is that Inside Out calls for participation. Its mission statement says that Inside Out is "is a large-scale participatory art project that transforms messages of personal identity into pieces of artistic work. Upload a portrait. Receive a poster. Paste it for the world to see."

JR just launched the website, and less than 500 photos have been uploaded at the time of this post. So hurry on over to Inside Out and get in on the front end of this amazing art project from JR.
